“Dear Dr. Reinisch,
We can never thank you enough for giving Parker a new life. You are the hope [that] lightened our [lives] during the darkest moment[s]. You and your amazing team have made LA [Los Angeles] a home for us. We hope Parker has a great human heart like yours and makes the world a better place like you are doing.”
Imagine the transformation—both physical and emotional—when your child no longer has to face the world with a visible birthmark.
With advanced giant congenital nevus removal surgery performed by world-renowned expert Dr. John Reinisch, your child can begin a life where their birthmark is no longer the center of attention.
It’s an overlooked fact that both the parent and the child bear the psychosocial burden due to untreated, visible birthmarks.
As a parent, you may have faced judgmental stares, unsolicited advice, or even cruel insinuations about your child’s appearance.
Meanwhile, your child, just wanting to fit in, may feel isolated or different because of their birthmark.
These emotional scars run deep, and ignoring them can have long-term psychological effects.
Dr. John Reinisch has always held this concern close to his heart, which is why he founded the International Nevus Institute (INI).
INI exists solely for this purpose: To provide families affected by visible birthmarks with compassionate, expert care for families like yours.
Dr. Reinisch formed INI because he strongly believes you and your family deserve the best possible outcome.
Are you looking for a safe, compassionate, highly individualized birthmark removal treatment that genuinely addresses your and your child’s unique needs, goals, and challenges? You’ve come to the right place.
Our mission is simple: to give your child the confidence to live a life free from the emotional weight of a visible birthmark.
INI is fully committed and equipped to guide and help you on the path to a life free from the discomfort of a visible difference.
Navigating school can be extra challenging for children with noticeable birthmarks. The constant stares and prejudice they have to deal with since infancy can significantly impact their confidence and self-esteem as they grow.
At INI, we understand the unique challenges your little one faces due to their visible difference. That’s why we believe that early intervention should not be feared.
While less experienced surgeons may recommend waiting until a child is older, this approach is not always in the best interest of the child.
Fortunately, you have found us. Dr. Reinisch has the skills, experience, and expertise to perform birthmark removal procedures at an early age.
Ideally, we conduct surgeries before the patient can walk to lessen the discomfort, lower the risk of falls and post-operative injuries, and speed up healing times.
Are you ready to help your child build confidence and enjoy life without the burden of a birthmark? You’ve come to the right place. Our entire care team at INI is here to guide and support you and your child.
We have compiled as many before-and-after photos of birthmark removal procedures as possible to show patients and affected families that successful outcomes are more than likely when they finally get the expert and compassionate care they need and deserve.
See how Dr. Reinisch, a world-class, uniquely qualified pediatric plastic surgeon, has helped improve the appearance and quality of life of many individuals with noticeable birthmarks.
Endre was born with a large raised pigmented nevus of the right nose, right lower eyelid, and cheek.
He had a single surgery with excision of the nevus with placement of a skin graft from his left abdomen & flank.
A few years later, we did a small touch-up surgery to revise the scarring and fat graft to improve the contour of his cheek.
Parker was born with a giant pigmented nevus on his left face, eyelids, eyebrows, and nose.
He had a three-stage surgery – first, excision of most of the nevus with placement of a temporary skin graft.
One week later, he had an exchange of the temporary skin graft for a permanent skin graft from his abdomen and left flank.
Third, the remaining nevus of his left eyelids was removed, and a skin graft was placed, along with small touch-ups of the previous surgery and a left eyebrow tattoo done by Natalie Mendes, a local medical tattoo artist.
Griffin was born with a giant nevus of his right arm and hand. He had a two-stage surgery to remove the nevus & place a temporary skin graft.
One week later, he had a second surgery to exchange the temporary skin graft with a permanent skin graft from his abdomen and flank.

My name is Dr. John Reinisch. With over 35 years of experience in pediatric reconstructive surgery, I have dedicated my career to treating children with congenital conditions, including giant pigmented birthmarks, known as giant congenital nevus.
As a recognized expert in this field, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of families from around the world with this condition. My approach is rooted in the belief that early intervention is crucial, and I typically recommend surgery before a child begins to walk.
Early treatment can lead to better outcomes. Young children tolerate surgery better with less psychological trauma. Skin grafting and tissue expansion are easier when children are younger.
If done before children are mobile, there is less likelihood that the child will fall onto the surgical areas, and significantly reduce the long-term impact on your child’s life.
As a parent, you want nothing but the best for your child. When your child is born with a medical condition such as a large, pigmented nevus, it affects not just the child but the entire family.
We understand that each nevus is unique, and the surgical plan is specific for each patient. Depending on size and location, we can use tissue expansion, temporary and permanent full-thickness skin grafts, and have a medical tattoo artist who can restore things like brow asymmetry, if needed.
For example, if a nevus includes the scalp, we use tissue expansion to move the hair-bearing scalp into the proper position to ensure there’s no hair loss. If the nevus involves the area around the eye, we use skin grafts to prevent distortion of the eye.
I recognize that every family’s situation is unique, & the decision to move forward with surgery is deeply personal. My team and I are here to provide comprehensive support to not only your child but also to you as parents.
We understand that this journey involves the entire family, and we are committed to being there for you every step of the way.
From your initial consultation to post-operative care, we will work closely with you to ensure that all your questions are answered, your concerns are addressed, & that you feel confident in the care your child is receiving.
We aim to create a supportive environment where your family feels empowered and informed, allowing you to focus on what matters most—your child’s health and happiness.
Thank you for considering us to be a part of your child’s care team. We are honored to be a part of this journey with you.
Warm regards,
Dr. John Reinisch
At INI, we recognize that each birthmark case is unique. We use an approach tailored to each individual child—this may include a multi-stage or single procedure.
We also understand that not all of our patients are local, and we are committed to offering flexible options for evaluating and determining the most suitable treatment plan for your child.
Whether through photos, a virtual consultation via Zoom, or an in-office visit, we will tailor the approach to your child’s specific and unique needs.
Treatment plans are customized based on several factors, including age, location, and the specific details of their case.

We typically recommend a simple excision for those needing to remove small- or medium-sized nevi for cosmetic reasons. During this procedure, we carefully remove the affected area and stitch the skin back for a smooth finish.
Dr. Reinisch meticulously chooses the best treatment for each patient. You’re in the right place if you’re seeking personalized, thoughtful care.
The surgical process can be stressful for families, so we take every care to ensure a pleasant experience. Essentially, all procedures are done as outpatients, meaning the child does not stay overnight in the hospital or surgical center.
Our dedicated team provides excellent care, effectively manages pain, keeps you informed, and is always available to assist with any needs or concerns, making the journey smoother for both you and your child.
We’ll maintain close communication with you and your child during their recovery journey. We’ll arrange follow-up visits to check your child’s progress and provide ongoing care.
The medical name for a mole is melanocytic nevus. Nevi may develop anywhere in the body and may be caused by cell mutations.
Moles that are present since birth are called congenital nevi. They form during the embryo’s development. About 1 in 100 babies is born with a congenital nevus.
Surgery is the only preferred option for treating large congenital melanocytic nevi.
Some people use “strawberry mark” as a colloquial term for a hemangioma birthmark because of its appearance. Hemangiomas typically develop two months after birth, grow rapidly, stabilize, and remain dormant after years of progressive atrophy.
Hemangioma, a vascular birthmark, may be treated via traditional surgery or nonsurgical options, like steroids. Depending on size and location, surgical excision may be the best treatment for your child’s hemangioma.
A sebaceous nevus has the following characteristics:
This birthmark is typically treated with excision (removal).
Other vascular birthmarks include venous, arteriovenous, and lymphatic malformations. These anomalies vary in size, location, and visibility. Early surgical treatment is often the best treatment plan.
